Alabama High School Football Head Coaches

John Fulgham

John Fulgham was a legend at Carver High School in Montgomery, Alabama, where, during his exemplary leadership with the Wolverines, his teams enjoyed two undefeated regular seasons and an Alabama Interscholastic Athletic Association State Championship in 1964.

Fulgham, who enrolled in Tuskegee after serving in the Army during World War II, was a letterman in both baseball and football and led the team in batting and homeruns.

For his stellar play, he rated as one of the best passers and kickers in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1948.

The great athlete took his Tuscaloosa County Training School education and 1949 Tuskegee degree in physical education and minor in science and began teaching.

His first job was at Coffee County Training School in Enterprise, Alabama where he stayed for two years before moving over to Carver High School in Montgomery. Fulgham coached most of his 35 years in education, including football, baseball, basketball and track and field.

Carvers victories landed Fulgham many honors, including Coach of the Year in 1964 and 1966. Fulgham led Carver High to a 133-73-11 record and a 1964 State Championship. The team fell just short of snagging the AIAA title again in 1966. He gave up his coaching duties in 1974 but continued as athletic director until his retirement 11 years later.

Fulgham retired from the Montgomery Public School System and Carver High School after three decades, 1951 to 1984, and having served as athletic director and head football coach.

Fulgham has left behind a legacy that includes induction into the Montgomery Sports Hall of Fame and the Tuskegee Institute Sports Hall of Fame. He had a tremendous influence on athletic programs in the State of Alabama and a successful impact on the lives of countless young people.

Coach Fulgham was inducted into the 2004 Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame, which was held at the Montgomery Civic Center on March 22, 2004.
